Live By Living
Volunteer Walk-Hike Supporter Position Description

Volunteer Walk-Hike Supporters have the same role whether they are volunteering on a walk, hike, or Cancer to 14K conditioning hike. Walk-Hike Supporters assist the Leader in guiding small groups of cancer survivors and caregivers (usually 4-12 individuals) on Live By Living walks and hikes. Walk-Hike Supporters’ primary duty is to provide companionship and encouragement to participants along the way. One Supporter typically brings up the rear on every walk or hike so slower participants don’t feel they are holding anyone back. Supporters occasionally are called up on to provide additional assistance like carrying some or all of a participant’s pack. In rare cases, they may accompany hikers who are unable to complete a hike back to the trailhead. Supporters also follow the Leader’s direction in event of an accident.
Schedule
Hikes are scheduled during daylight hours, any day of the week or weekend. Hikes are held year-round, weather permitting.

Location(s)
Live By Living offers walks and hikes at multiple locations in Colorado. The hike or walk leader typically chooses the event location. Walk-Hike Supporters may work with the Leaders to propose new walk or hike locations.

Requirements
  • For walks, must be able to walk 3-4 miles on fairly level ground at a moderate pace. For hikes, should be a reasonably experienced hiker who is able to hike at a moderate pace on hilly terrain, potentially at high altitude.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be up-to-date on Covid vaccinations
  • Participate in a brief orientation session (in-person or remote) and read provided training materials,
  • Attend 1-2 hikes for training
