Cancer to 14K IS BACK FOR 2022!
Cancer to 14K is a 10-week conditioning program for cancer survivors and their caregivers who want to jump back into life, get stronger and feel better. It includes weekly group hikes, and recommendations and encouragement for exercising on your own during the week. The hikes get harder each week. Not so long ago, oncologists were advising their patients to rest and take it easy during and after their treatment. No more! The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that survivors get at least 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate exercise (a level of exertion where you can talk, but not sing). Cancer to 14K, plus regular exercise on your own in-between sessions, will get you there and more!
For 2022, we are offering both in-person and virtual tracks for Cancer to 14K. There are 3 virtual tracks of different levels of difficulty. The virtual tracks are curated lists of 12 weekly hikes and walks that allow you to go out when it's convenient for you. By following the hikes on the list (and walking regularly between the suggested hikes/walks), you'll be able to improve your fitness AND enjoy some of the beauty of natural areas around Denver and Boulder.
There are 3 in-person tracks of Cancer to 14K in 2022: EASY, MODERATE, and DIFFICULT. People in the DIFFICULT track will train to climb Grays Peak, a 14,270' high mountain, in Week 10. The Grays Peak hike is about 7.5 miles long, with 3,000 feet of elevation gain. The MODERATE track is less difficult, but still challenging. Instead of climbing a 14,000' high peak, people in this group will train to complete a 14,000 step long hike -- about 5 and a half miles. We will hike to Blue Lake in the Indian Peaks wilderness. Blue Lake sits at 11,300'. The hike has about 850 feet of elevation gain.
The EASY track is 5 weeks long. We will build up to hiking 14,000 feet -- about 2.7 miles. (We may round that up to 3 miles ;-)). The EASY track will include walks on paved paths, and some trails with good footing and a little up and down.
All tracks begin with easier hikes, and gradually build up to their respective goals. Hikes are held on Saturdays, except the Grays Peak hike is scheduled for a Friday due to weekend crowds. Sundays will be used as rain dates.
